A famous Christian author wrote that the world’s major religions have eight major themes, eight commandments in common. That list included loving others… respecting others… and being honest…

among other ethical standards. So in light of those eight commandments, what makes Christianity so

different?

A lot of strange things happen in the name of Religion. Behavior that is just odd. Faces of religious icons appearing in random places. Fanatical rules and restrictions to follow in order to be 'good'.  Are all of these misguided attempts to connect with God? Do we try too hard to make sense of
something so big and mysterious? How is what Jesus offers any different?

It happens again and again: people go through the most difficult circumstances imaginable, and come out on the other side with rock-solid, unshakable faith.

As they describe their stories later, they say, "I wouldn't have signed up for it; I wouldn't choose to go through it again; and I wouldn't wish it on anybody else. But God did something in the middle of those circumstances that I don't think he could have done any other way."

Our faith is permanently impacted by these big, bad, bold, unexpected circumstances. And that's not accidental; it's intentional on God's part.

God builds our faith through personal ministry opportunities--
those times when we're aware of a certain need others have,
and we can't escape the sense that God's telling us, "I want
you involved in meeting that need."

We naturally resist discipline. Recognizing that and meeting it head-on is good, because faith is like a muscle; the more you exercise it-stretch it, exhaust it-the stronger it becomes.

Our faith grows when we listen to biblical teaching that is
meaningful, practical, and applicable to everyday life and
then respond to it with action.
"Unapplied truth is like paint. It doesn't do anybody any good
until it is applied." We can be the most learned of believers,
but if our knowledge doesn't move us toward application,
our faith will wither.

Do you know people whose faith in God is so strong that you could sometimesdescribe it as amazing? What is it that makes their confidence in God so strong? God wants to take us to a new level of big faith-extraordinary trust and confidence in him. God is honored and thrilled by our faith. So what is it that will grow our faith so he'll be increasingly honored?
God uses five primary ways to expand our faith: (1) practical teaching from the Bible, (2) providential relationships, (3) private disciplines (4) personal ministry, and (5) pivotal circumstances.

Many people in our world have a similar experience. They have come to a pointin their lives where they feel that they have lost faith in God. They maybe were raised Catholic, Baptist, Jewish etc., but they have come to a place where theirreligious faith seems empty and without hope. They feel that religious leaders aretrying to control them rather than lead them to freedom in a personal relationship with God. Jesus wants us to know that the starting point of faith in him is forgiveness. He doesn't want to control us, he wants to restore us.

Nobody likes sitting in a waiting room. The chairs are uncomfortable. The magazines are out-of-date. The
coffee is stale. And with each passing minute, sitting there waiting for your name to be called, you get a
disturbing sense that you've been forgotten. But is that really the case? In life's waiting room, have you
been forgotten, or is all this waiting part of a larger plan?

You live according to your conscience. It dictates your thinking of what you ought and ought not to do.  Likewise, family units have a corporate conscience. Large and small organizations have a conscience.  Fortune 500 companies have a conscience. But is there such a thing as a national conscience? If so, what governs the national conscience of the United States of America? Popular demand? Or is there something else governing Our National Conscience?

“Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law

for themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that the requirements of the law are

written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now

even defending them.”

…"No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him" 1 Corinthians 2:9.

Satan wants us to believe the lies that Heaven can wait and that Heaven is our default destination. Satan wants us to focus on life today with no thought of the future with God. He wants us to think that we will not go to Hell unless we do something horrific. The scripture shows that these are false ideas.

This weekend we will see that God plans to make a new heaven and a new earth, he will do away with death and the old order of things. He will live with man and complete His plan to dwell with us forever.

Today we’re going to hear first hand…the impact Christians can have when they give of their time and of their hearts to show compassion on the lost and hurting people of this world.  Saying you are a Christ follower and actually living it are two entirely different things.  You must have an outflow of Christ’s love in order to make a difference in the lives of people and the Kingdom of God.

How are we supposed to remain hopeful in a hopelessly broken world? We want to be hopeful, but when
relationships sour, stock prices tumble, dreams disappear, and plans crumble, hope can be hard to come
by. In a world without guarantees, hope can be a dangerous thing. But what if the tension we feel is the
result of putting our hope in the wrong things? What if God has a different plan for us—a plan built on his
unfailing love?

Last week, we said that God is at work even in uncertain times. It is good to know that he is
working, but what should we be doing? How should we live in the midst of uncertainty? How can we
keep from being overwhelmed by the fears and insecurities that often go hand in hand with uncertainty?
God has a plan, and his plan is to replace our anxieties with peace.

Uncertainty. As a society, we live in a world of uncertainty. Uncertain social conditions. Uncertain economic times. Uncertain global developments. Yet uncertainty is nothing new. The characters in the Bible experienced wildly fluctuating levels of uncertainty. . . often feeling as if life was moving backwards, getting worse. And the questions remain the same. Where's God? Is he going to show up? Is he still in control?

Some of the brightest moments in our lives are the result of brokenness. When we can see that God is working through undesirable circumstances - even the ones we bring on ourselves - there is a sense of purpose and peace that emerges. Knowing that God is still active during uncertain times allows us to maintain hope and faith and keeps us from despair. We can rest knowing that God has not abandoned us . . . and that he's still in control.

Jesus body wasn't just a figment of the imagination or the
appearance of a ghost--the disciples touched him, and he ate food.
On the other hand, his body wasn't merely a restored human body
like Lazarus's (John 11)-- he was able to appear and disappear.
Jesus resurrected body was immortal. This is the kind of body we
will be given in Eternity.

Luke 23:50-24:12, Acts 2:22-24, 32, 36-41

In our celebration of Easter we tend to lose sight of what Easter is
really about. It's not about bunnies, baby chicks, easter egg hunts,
colored eggs, chocolate, pretty dresses and fancy clothes. It's not
even a celebration of Christianity, or the teachings of Jesus.

It is celebrating a specific  historic event . It is about the resurrection
of Jesus from the grave. God brought Jesus back to Life! Death is
conquered. Sin is paid for in full. We have opportunity to receive
forgiveness and life as a free gift from God. We have a right standing
with God from God because Jesus gave his life for us.

The most important event in human history was about to take place.
Jesus, as the spotless Lamb of God, would give his life in order to
save his people from the penalty of death brought by sin. Even though
he would face extreme anguish and agony, he would not give up or give
in. He went ahead with the mission for which he had come. The way to
the kingdom is the way of the cross.

The story of Zacchaeus is by far one of the most interesting stories in the life of Jesus.  In only ten verses we receive a story filled with rich description, one that can’t help but become a short movie within the imagination of all who read it.  But at the same time that the story of Zacchaeus offers us something, it also beckons us to something.  The story of Zacchaeus is not so much about a little man in a tree as it is about our relationship with the despised, discarded, and ignored of our world.  Relationship? Jesus’ point exactly.

The bible is full of great, heart warming stories from Jesus.  There’s the story of the little cute lost sheep, and the one about the father and son embracing after the son was lost to his perilous ways. And don’t forget the tear-jerking story about the scandal in the work place.  Wait, that doesn’t fit.  Or does it?

We find in Luke chapter 16 a story told by Jesus that is different than any other story.  A story of scandal, dishonesty and superior intellect.  The question is, how does Jesus plan on using such a questionable story to communicate a Godly truth?  Can it be done?

Luke 15:1-31

These three parables reveal God as a Searching Father, looking for the lost, actively seeking them, and rejoicing when they are found. An essential part of God's character is about extending mercy to the undeserving -- not only those who happen to mess up , but an active program of seeking out the hurting and oppressed, the blind and the imprisoned . That is the message of the cross, the message of active love.

People should be sure they have responded to the one
who brings in the kingdom. It is easy to think we auto-
matically qualify-- by birth, by cultural connection, or by
heritage. But to Jesus, a relationship with God is personal
in nature and means setting ourselves apart to follow him.
The door remains open individually for everyone. It is an
equal-opportunity road, with access to all who take it, but
the route is marked out by God, not by us. He wants people
to consciously enter into relationship with him, aware of
their sins and shortcomings, their need for God, and the
salvation Jesus has achieved for them.

Our wealth opens up choices for us that allow us to pursue our own interests
in a variety of ways. Such pursuits can easily keep us from using resources
in a way most honoring to God. Jesus is not condemning wealth as such, but
its use. How do we use what God  has given us? Do we seek to pile up
treasure for ourselves? Is generosity our habit? Or does compassion take a
back seat to our personal desires? The questions raised here are timeless.

Discipleship is not a casual affair to Jesus. In a series of three encounters, Jesus shows the high priority he places on discipleship.  It is not an accident that this teaching follows a passage that centered on rejection. Part of  what makes following Jesus so demanding is the fact that some type of rejection is given for the believer. Following Jesus takes focused commitment.  Kingdom preaching is an urgent task for followers of Jesus.

The Christian faith goes beyond knowing what others believe. It requires us to hold beliefs for ourselves. When Jesus asks, "Who do you say I am?" he wants us to take a stand, Who do you say Jesus is?  People are willing to pay a high price for something they value. Is it any surprise that Jesus would demand this much commitment from his followers? There are at least
three conditions that must be met by people who want to follow Jesus. We must be willing to deny self, to take up our crosses, and to follow him. Anything less is superficial lip service.

The feeding of the five thousand is the only miracle recorded in all four Gospels. The miracle shows how Jesus meets needs. A key to this miracle is that the provision comes through the disciples. Jesus had just commissioned them to share the kingdom message. They needed to be aware of what they could do through Christ. Jesus shows them that they have access to his authority through his enablement. What about us? What would happen if we trusted Jesus with our resources? How would that change us?

Paul could speak of sinners "of whom I am chief" (2 Timothy 1:15). It is true to say that the greatest  of sins is to be conscious of no sin; but a sense of need will open the door to the forgiveness of God, because God is love, and love's greatest glory is to be needed."

The greatest event in history had just happened! The Messiah had been born! For ages the Jews had waited for this, and when it finally occurred, the announcement came to humble shepherds.  The good news about Jesus is that he comes to all, including the plain and the ordinary. He comes to anyone with a heart humble enough to accept him. Whoever you are, whatever you do, you can have Jesus in your life. Don't think you need extraordinary qualifications.  He accepts you as you are.

God sent the angel Gabriel to announce to Zechariah that He and his wife Elizabeth would have a son born to them and to Mary that she would give birth to Jesus the Savior of the world. Both were miracle births. Zechariah and Elizabeth were past child bearing years and Mary was a virgin. Zechariah expressed doubt that this could be, yet he was obedient. Mary was young, poor, and female. In her culture, she would seem to be unusable by God for any major task. But God chose Mary
for one of the most important acts of obedience he has ever demanded of anyone. What we will see this weekend, is that God can use you if you trust him.

Bible Ref.: Hebrews 11:1, Luke 7:1-17

"Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see."  Two words describe faith: sure and certain. These two qualities need a secure beginning and ending point. The beginning point of faith is believing in God's character-he is who he says. The end point is believing in God's promises-he will do what he says. When we believe that God will fulfill his promises even though we don't see those promises materializing yet, we demonstrate true faith.

The story of the widow's son illustrates salvation. The whole world was dead in sin, just as the widow's son was dead. But God had compassion on us, and he sent Jesus to raise us to life with him. Accept God's gift of life, praise God for it, and use your life to do his will.

Jesus reminds us that we need to follow the right teachers, and to not be critical of others.  He reminds us that our speech  and actions reveal the true underlying beliefs, attitudes, and motivations in our lives. Obeying God is like building a house on a solid foundation that stands firm when storms come. Be sure your life is built on the solid foundation of knowing and trusting Jesus Christ.

God did not pour out his love for this world because he was sure it would “work.” Many people are still a mess, ungrateful, and unresponsive to God’s generosity. Yet his gift of grace and love wasn’t contingent on whether we could pay him back or not. As a result, while we trust that God will use our gifts, monies, and talents to impact others’ lives, the goal is not to fix anything or anybody. The goal is not to make the poor not poor or the needy not needy. The goal is for followers of Christ to do for others that has been done for them.

Jesus made it very clear that the values of people who are in God's kingdom do not match up with the values of this world. To the world, kingdom values seem strange and out of touch. Jesus points out that worldly values are limited and shallow. There is a choice that must be made if we want to follow Jesus. It requires trust, hope and patience. Jesus said, "Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven."

The Pharisees thought their religious system had all the answers.  They could not accept Jesus because he did not fit into their system.  Could we miss Jesus for the same reason? Is our faith in a religious system or is it a personal relationship with our Savior? No religious system is big enough to contain Christ completely or to fulfill perfectly all his desires for the world.

The Pharisees were very skeptical of Jesus. He represented a new way of thinking that was in opposition to theirs. They were paying attention to every action that he took and to his possible motives. He was a threat to their system and what they represented. This weekend we will look at two of their questions of Jesus, his response, and what that means to us today.

Study Questions (click here)

After Jesus returned from the desert  to Galilee, news spread about him and everyone praised him.  In Nazareth, all spoke well of him and were amazed at his words. Isn't this Joseph's son? They asked.  In Capernaum, an evil spirit cried out. I know who you are-the Holy One of God! Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, You are the Son of God! Jesus would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Christ. The enemies of God know exactly who Jesus is, and they fear him. Just as it was then, so it is today.

His mind and his body begged him to slow down and take a break, only for a brief moment.  The task of carrying his paralyzed friend had taken its toll on his out of shape body.  But his heart knew that this was their chance.  And so, he continued on. His forearms burning, his shoulders on fire from the lifting, he kept his head up, his mind determined and his feet one in front of the other.  As he looked ahead he noticed his 3 other friends were most definitely exhausted as well, for they too shared the burden of carrying the body of their paralyzed friend.  Their thought? If we can just get him to Jesus, the pain of the journey will forever be worth it.  They made it. But making it wasn’t enough.  The toughest part of the journey had just begun.

Satan, whose name means adversary in the Hebrew language, who tempted Adam and Eve in the garden, also tempted Jesus in the desert. Satan is a real being, a created but rebellious fallen angel, and not a symbol or an idea.  He constantly fights against God and those who follow and obey God. Jesus was a prime target for the devil's temptations. Satan succeeded with Adam and Eve, and he hoped to succeed with Jesus too.

This weekend we start a journey together through the gospel (good news) about Jesus according to Luke. Our desire is to understand the times in Jesus day and  to construct a bridge of understanding his teaching in our life and times. Luke is the most comprehensive of the four gospels and gives us details so we can believe in the reliability of the history of Jesus life.  Jesus love for people is good news for everyone. We desire not only to believe and to  understand, but to respond to him in faith.

Something is missing between what happens on Sunday mornings and what happens at school, or in the office, or at home on Monday mornings. There's a gap between truth and life-the way you know you should live and the way life really unfolds. So how do you fill the gap? What's the missing part? How do you fill the gap between thinking forgiveness is a good idea and actually forgiving? Between believing God is in control and actually making decisions that reflects that reality? Small groups. On your own, you feel isolated. But doing life together, encouraged by the faith stories of others, fills in the missing part between truth and life.

Does the government exist to serve the demands of the majority? Or does the government exist to protect
the rights of the minority? Either way, a leader that succumbs solely to the voices of public opinion
becomes imprisoned to pleasing the people instead of leading the people. The story of Pharaoh and
Joseph illustrates the values of a leader who had the courage to ignore the complaints of the overindulged
and do what was right. Granted, political leaders have issues that come across their desks every day. But
how much more effective would their leadership be if they led with the future in mind, rather than
responding to the demands of public opinion? In other words: lead us, don’t try to please us.

All leaders have some level of authority. They have the authority to make important decisions. They have
the authority to assign others to a particular task. But not all leaders have influence.  Not all leaders live
with their words in alignment with their actions.  In other words, leaders may have positional authority,
but no moral authority.  That raises the questions: Is authority more important than influence?  Are you a
leader because of your influence or your authority?

Four thousand years ago people followed their superstitions hoping that a god or gods
would bless their crops and preserve their tribes. Into this confusion stepped God. And
the first move he made was not to hand down a bunch of laws or to answer all of

The church often mistakes Christian obedience as the first step in the Christian life.  As a result, for many people the Christian faith becomes a rule-based religion.  Instead, the Scriptures reveal that Jesus’ initial invitation is to follow him.  He invites us to follow him until we begin believing that He is indeed who he says he is.  This belief that God loves us and has the best in store for us, then, becomes the reason we obey.

We want to spark a renewed interest in Christ in Canby.  We will explore how we can all have a part in the most important movement in the world.

We’ve all heard it said that you can’t earn your way into heaven.  It is true that no amount service, good deeds, or kind favors have the power to give salvation.  However without a single trace of faith-based action in our life, the bible says our faith is “dead?.  When God calls you onto the stage of life to act for Him, is it “Lights! Camera! ..... Nothing??  This week we will look at the important of living an action-packed Christian life.

More than likely, prayer was one of the first things you began to do as you started growing in your relationship with God. But when was the last time you stopped to examine your prayers?  Could it be that they need a little recalibration? As we examine what Jesus had to say about prayer, you will find a fresh appreciation for its purpose and place in your life.

The key to professioanl margin is focus.  We should learn to work toward what we're good at -- which means improving our strengths and delegating our areas of weakness.  When we learn to do less, we accomplish more.

There's something in all of us that wants to walk as close to the line as possible.  By setting moral margins, we protect ourselves from experiencing the consequences of sin.  Because sexual sin has the greatest consequences, we should always ask ourselves, "Am I fleeing from or flirting with the line?"

So how do you create financial margin?  Learn four practical tips to achieving financial margin:  (1) Identify your annual available income, (2) set margin goals, (3) determine your monthly consumable income, and (4) develop a plan.

When we live without financial margin, we rob ourselves and we rob God.  As a result we end up overextending ourselves and living with the stress of making ends meet.  By making God a priority and creating margin, we give God the opportunity to be involved in our finances.

In an effort to get the most out of life we end up cramming as much stuff as we can into our day. The urgent begins to dominate our schedule, and the important things begin to slip away. In order to gain control of our limited time, we must let God help us prioritize it. This begins by setting aside time for Him.

Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.   Psalm 90:12

"Man's days are determined;
you have decreed the number of his months
and have set limits he cannot exceed." Job 14:5

Our culture encourages us to live as close to the edge as
possible. As a result we pack our schedules and empty our
checkbooks--all in a quest to grab the most we can from life.
This kind of life is dangerous, however, because God created
us with limits. The closer we approach our limits, the less
margin and greater potential we have to burn ourselves out--
as well as those around us.

Your character, or your interior life, affects your relationships and responsibilities in this life.  For
example, if your interior is a mess, then the rest of your life is affected negatively.  While there are
built-in systems to measure how you’re doing in your relationships and responsibilities, how do you
measure your interior life?  Who’s walking alongside you to help you pay attention to your

Ultimately, feeling guilty about our wealth or becoming more aware of others’ needs has a relatively small impact on our generosity. Instead, they are short- term motivators for giving. The longstanding factor that alters our attitudes about money is viewing wealth through the lens of eternity; looking at our wealth in the context of eternity loosens our grip on our stuff, which loosens its grip on us.

Who wants to be average? Well, apparently, rich people. Survey after survey reveals that when it comes to generosity, rich people rank equal to, if not below, those with fewer resources. But as people who have been blessed with both extra time and money, this should not be. Those who have margin have the extra responsibility to be more than average when it comes to using what they have to serve others.

Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. 1 Timothy 6:18

In our affluent society the excesses of wealth are out in full display. As a result we don't usually
think of ourselves as rich because there is always someone who has more. But the truth is, if
we have more than we need, then we are rich. And as those who are rich, we have certain temptations that are specific to us. In this message we'll discuss a passage written directly to rich people and the subtle temptation that it addresses.

We spend most of our days trying to get rich. We work and scheme and worry in the pursuit of this ever elusive goal. And yet while we accumulate more and more stuff, and the worries that come with it, we never feel rich. But what if we've already achieved our goal, and we didn't even realize it? What if the thing we're chasing is already in our hands? We'll discuss the seemingly preposterous question: "What if you were, in fact, rich?"

We all emerge from childhood with a picture of how we want life to be.  We dream about our future
lives with our perfect families and perfect jobs.  Yet, rarely does life go the way we anticipated.
More often than not, our best-laid plans go awry.  Things don’t work out.  And we’re left with the
temptation to take matters into our own hands and force our will on the situation... leaving God out
of the picture.  David, however, modeled a different approach in responding to his own set of broken
dreams.  An approach focused on surrendering control rather than taking control.

As a child, you dream about what life has in store for you.  And as you matured, some of those dreams may have come to fruition.  Other dreams may have initially developed, but have faded away with the realities of life.  And some dreams may still seem so far away that they may never come true at all.  What do you do when dreams can’t come true – when you realize that you’ve lost control?

Spiritual Attention Deficit Disorder

Direction determines destination. But what is it that influences direction? What is it that starts us on our course, either for the places we want to go or the destinations we'd rather avoid? If we could determine what this is, then we could change our course upstream and save ourselves a lot of time, money, and heartache. Discover what this is and how you leverage it to reach the destinations God desires for you.

Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze directly before you. Proverbs 4:25

Twisted: Mistaken Identity

Sin is a very uncomfortable word. It implies that there exists a moral absolute that we are accountable to and a moral absolute that we have fallen short of. And as a result, this word has almost completely dropped out of our vocabulary. But when we allow the concept of sin to be twisted, there are far-reaching consequences that we seldom recognize.

When we experience pain, we often ask, "Why?" In times of pain, we find ourselves desperately seeking for purpose. Tell me there is meaning in this. Tell me this happened for a reason. All too often when we look around at our present circumstances and look back to examine the past, we can't see how anything good can come out of the pain. This is because the purpose behind our pain is found by looking elsewhere.

Somewhere along the way, most of us become convinced that if we disagree with a rule or regulation then we're free to disobey it. We live life with the general notion that we should be able to do what we want when we want with no one to answer to. However, as we'll discover, when you choose to disregard authority, there is more at stake than is readily evident.

Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.      Romans 13:1

Looking for God in all the wrong places.
Sunday, August 23, 2009
Message by:  Pastor Ken Harvey

And with each passing minute, sitting there waiting for your name to be called, you get a

been forgotten, or is all this waiting part of a larger plan?

Our National Conscience
Sunday, July 5, 2009
Message by:  Pastor Ken Harvey

It happens again and again: people go through the most difficult circumstances imaginable, and come out on the other side with rock-solid, unshakable faith.

As they describe their stories later, they say, "I wouldn't have signed up for it; I wouldn't choose to go through it again; and I wouldn't wish it on anybody else. But God did something in the middle of those circumstances that I don't think he could have done any other way."

Our faith is permanently impacted by these big, bad, bold, unexpected circumstances. And that's not accidental; it's intentional on God's part.

until it is applied." We can be the most learned of believers,
but if our knowledge doesn't move us toward application,
our faith will wither.

Five Things God Uses to Grow Our Faith - BIG FAITH
Sunday, September 27, 2009
Message by:  Ken Harvey

Do you know people whose faith in God is so strong that you could sometimesdescribe it as amazing? What is it that makes their confidence in God so strong? God wants to take us to a new level of big faith-extraordinary trust and confidence in him. God is honored and thrilled by our faith. So what is it that will grow our faith so he'll be increasingly honored?
God uses five primary ways to expand our faith: (1) practical teaching from the Bible, (2) providential relationships, (3) private disciplines (4) personal ministry, and (5) pivotal circumstances.

SET FREE: What the Law Couldn't do, God did!
Sunday, September 13, 2009
Message by:  Ken Harvey

A famous Christian author wrote that the world’s major religions have eight major themes, eight commandments in common. That list included loving others… respecting others… and being honest…

among other ethical standards. So in light of those eight commandments, what makes Christianity so

different?

Covering All the Bases
Sunday, September 6, 2009
Message by:  Ken Harvey

A lot of strange things happen in the name of Religion. Behavior that is just odd. Faces of religious icons appearing in random places. Fanatical rules and restrictions to follow in order to be 'good'.  Are all of these misguided attempts to connect with God? Do we try too hard to make sense of
something so big and mysterious? How is what Jesus offers any different?

Looking for God in all the wrong places.
Sunday, August 23, 2009
Message by:  Pastor Ken Harvey

Many people in our world have a similar experience. They have come to a pointin their lives where they feel that they have lost faith in God. They maybe were raised Catholic, Baptist, Jewish etc., but they have come to a place where theirreligious faith seems empty and without hope. They feel that religious leaders aretrying to control them rather than lead them to freedom in a personal relationship with God. Jesus wants us to know that the starting point of faith in him is forgiveness. He doesn't want to control us, he wants to restore us.
